Whitehead’s “Zone One” Is No Average Zombie Apocalypse

There’s a new zombie book out by Colson Whitehead called Zone One.

I know what you’re thinking: it’s already a crowded market. True enough. We’ve seen a rash of zombie films and books in the past 5-10 years, some orthodox and others reinventions of the zombie genre. This one appears to be a bit of the latter, adding some comedic elements into the mix, akin to perhaps Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

I haven’t read Whitehead’s book yet, but today’s radio interview has me intrigued and hopeful for a fresh take:

I was pleasantly surprised by this book by Whitehead. A few pages into the first chapter I almost put it down. Luckily I gave it a few more pages and then found I could not put it down.

This is not a constant action novel. The scenes jump from current events, long past and near past all the way through. Mark (our anti-hero) is a slide through life knida guy who know has to slide through Post Apocalyptic New York on three man sweeper team. Everyone in the book gets to tell their story about how they survive “Last Night”.

Characters and “skels” come and go but Mark keeps trundling on.

This is not World War “Z” where you are looking back at the event. This novel reaches into all the set backs that both individuals and the new government has trying to get a handle on the hordes of “skels” that need to be cleaned out.

I enjoyed this book and would suggest to any fan that they give it a read.
