Trailer for apocalyptic French drama movie This is the End
This is the End ( French title Les Derniers Jours Du Monde) is an apocalyptic movie drama directed by Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu, the brothers are well known for artistic films which explore the human condition.
And it seems this new movie will be no different, as it uses an oncoming apocalypse as a spur to action for the main character played by Mathieu Amalric.
Summary:
With only days remaining until a global apocalypse will wipe out the whole of mankind, a man decides to resolve the one big regret in his life; giving up his one true love. With time running out he makes an extraordinary road trip from France to Spain in search of his long lost love. However in the light of the coming catastrophe things take an unexpected turn, as the few remaining people he comes across have decided to simply enjoy their last days on the planet. The half empty hotels have now become home to people abandoning themselves to some last moments of lust and pleasure.
Though giving in to some temptations on the way, he resolutely continues on his journey to reunite with his lost love even though it may bring him back to Paris which has now become a danger zone.
I must admit I’m quite intrigued by this movie; it’s obviously not your typical disaster flick focusing more on the drama rather than the event itself. I think that’s actually what I’m finding appealing about this as it’ll be a nice change of pace from the high adrenal apocalyptic movies I’ve seen of late. It’s also always interesting to see what people would do given only a few days before the world is about to end, with no laws, no restrictions and nothing to regret. Hollywood would have us believe we’d like to spend this time rioting and looting. But I can’t quite see the point in breaking into a store for a free toaster oven or Gucci sunglasses with only a day or so left to live. Are we really that materialistic?
Anyway the film opens in France on August 19, I’ll keep you updated if/when there’s any worldwide release or when it’s available on DVD.
