The Colony Turning the Post-Apocalypse into Reality TV

TV News — By Shaun Clarke on July 1, 2009 at 2:50 am

The Discovery Channel will be airing a new reality TV show The Colony, which will see 10 “survivors” struggle to recreate some semblance of society.

The show will air at 10pm on Tuesday July 21.

Summary:
The so called survivors will be contained within a large complex that will simulate a post–apocalyptic environment. The shows producers have stated that the 10 will have to complete a number of tasks in order to survive. They will also need to turn the remnants of civilization into life saving supplies and equipment. This task will be made even harder, as they will need to defend themselves from looters and other undesirables who want to take what they’ve built.

To be honest when I first heard about the show late last year I laughed and dismissed it without giving it too much thought. But now I’m starting to think that this could actually be quite interesting. I mean it is the Discovery Channel after all, so we should hopefully be spared from the usual media hungry Reality TV types that these kinds of shows attract. And considering the tasks they have to perform, which includes creating a water filtration system and a greenhouse, I’d imagine there must be a few scientific boffin types amongst them, so maybe I could learn a thing or two… just in case…

I like the sound of this, I’m suprised this hasn’t been done before. I know they did a big experiment once I think it was called bioshpere 2 where they had people living in a seeled greenhouse type envirnment for 2 years to see if they could generate enough oxygen and food and be totally self sufficient. I’m looking foward to this.
