The 7 Most Anticipated Apocalyptic Movie Sequels
Movie News — By Shaun Clarke on January 28, 2010 at 4:25 pmWell after drawing inspiration from an article I read recently, which detailed a rather large collection of movie sequels heading our way (see end of post.) I decided to do a roundup of the most highly anticipated apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movie sequels that are not only currently in development, but that also have a good chance of being developed in the very near future. And there are no less than 7, some of which you will already be aware of, some that you won’t and a few that might just surprise you. It’s also worth noting that as stated some of these movies are still very much on the drawing board, but will hopefully be in the pipeline at some stage soon. Whilst digging around I also collected a nice little list of remakes in the works too so expect that to come shortly.
28 Months Later
After the huge success of the first two movies; 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, it’s hardly surprising that a third installment is currently in the works. Although it’s well noted that Fox Searchlight is eager to make the second sequel it’s still very much in the early stages. However it still remains the most highly anticipated apocalyptic movie sequel that’s on everyone’s radar.
Cloverfield 2
JJ Abrams was initially very outspoken about the possibility of a sequel after the success of Cloverfield, many pundits even expected him to knock out a second movie within a year. Well 2 years on there’s still not much news regarding the sequel although Abrams has recently stated that he is currently working on ideas with director Matt Reeves. How long before it goes into production is anyone’s guess but it’s definitely on the cards.
I Am Legend 2
Again details of the possible sequel or indeed more likely prequel to this movie is still very much up in the air at the moment. However judging by the rumors doing the circuit and the success of the first movie the follow up to the film will no doubt come about at some point soon.
ID4-Ever (Independence Day 2)
ID4-Ever is the working title that Roland Emmerich has given to his planned sequel to Independence Day. During his recent promotional work for 2012 Emmerich disclosed that he plans to make not one but two sequels to the smash hit 90s movie. He also let it known that although he hasn’t even got a script for the projects yet Will Smith will definitely be involved.
Mad Max 4 – Fury Road

Well it’s been a quarter of a century since we last saw the leather clad post-apocalyptic hero Max Rockatansky grace the big screen. Many fans are eagerly anticipating the continuation of this iconic series of movies. But luckily enough we won’t have to wait too long seen as the development of the movie is currently under way. Although details of the movie are a closely guarded secret, what we do know is that Mel Gibson has been replaced with Tom Hardy and it’s likely that this latest installment will follow directly on from the last movie Beyond Thunderdome. Fury Road will most likely be released at some point in 2011. More details can be found here
The Thing
Again another 80s movie follow up that we won’t have to wait too long for, but this time it’s a prequel to the original movie. Set just prior to the events of the first film it will follow a Norwegian Arctic camps encounter with the body cloning alien. Filming for the movie begins in Canada shortly and we should expect a 2011 release, more details can be found here
Zombieland 2
Well if like me you want to see more of the comedic post-apocalyptic madness that was Zombieland then you’ll be happy to know that Sony has given the green light for a sequel. It’s expected that both Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg will return along with director Ruben Fleischer and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. As yet still no news on when production will commence but it’s likely that the script is being worked on at this very moment.
Other Notable Sequels:
Alien 5
Avatar 2
The Chronicles Of Riddick 2
Dark Knight Sequel
District 9 (possible prequel)
Men In Black 3
Star Trek 2
Transformers 3
Underworld 4

28 months later!! well it’s about time! I’m not sure about The Thing prequel though I’d much rather see a follow on from where the last movie left off, we never got to find out whether ol Kurt Russel was in fact Kurt Russel!
ID4-Ever? sounds like a Die Hard sequel
where are the new ideas, the considered musings of future possibilities, the inventiveness and imagination seems to have gone out of story telling.
I want to be taken to new worlds!
28 Months Later has LONG been overdue, but it’s awesome that they are considering it. I am Legend would also be very eagerly waited upon, however a lot of the scenarios in Legend could be better re-written.
With the mass surplus of armoured vehicles and reinforced buildings, one would think that any sort of standoff would be very practical.
I would REALLY like to see the Intrepid or some other similar sort of backdrop do be use again ( maybe the survivor holes up in the Battleship Alabama in Mobile, AL. or sets up at Staten Island). What ever the writers choose to do, I hope they will make it a lot more realistic and interesting, with more than one survivor for the majority of the movie.
