With 2012 around the corner and the end of the world on every ones mind, it is no wonder why we are having such an increase in doomsday movies. Well, one mans worries are this mans pleasures as I can now look forward to movie after movie regarding my favorite genre. Maybe it’s the thought of waking up to a desolate endless wasteland. Where the only worry left is to survive on an open field rather than the reality of a maze with endless walls that has made me a fan of this genre since my first movie. Regardless, if it is post apocalyptic arid landscapes or zombie infested city streets, it doesn’t matter as both roads are travelled by the same type of weathered warrior. In search not of money or fame but of safety and companionship. There is no rest for the weary and there certainly is no love for the timid. These movies are about thinking fast, always being on the move and making sure that the day is seen through the same living eyes as yesterday rather than decaying ones of a could be tomorrow. I continue to enjoy one of my favorite past times and watching ‘The Book of Eli’ made me a happy man. The Hughes brothers did an excellent job in having us put hope into one mans faith by telling us the story of Eli’s righteous quest through a dark and troubled time. I really liked the religious aspect and having Gary Oldman as the nemesis didn’t hurt the picture. It is no wonder Denzel Washington agreed to make the movie, as it was filled with wit, clever use of religion, and amazing choreographed fight scenes.

Friday saw an impressive opening for the Warner Bros post-apocalyptic movie The Book of Eli, in which it toppled James Cameron’s Avatar from the Box Office daily top spot, with an estimated $11.7 million to Avatars $10.4 million. However this victory was short lived as Avatar clawed back its overall weekend takings by Sunday, with an estimated taking of $41.3 million to The Book of Eli’s $31.6 million. It seems that even Denzel can’t impede the unstoppable machine that is Avatar, which is inching ever closer towards that $500 million domestic threshold. It’s still early days for The Book of Eli as far as Box Office sales are concerned, but with some other major contenders being released this week including Legion on Friday, it may struggle to hold on to its current position for long.

The Book of Eli could best be described as a post-apocalyptic western. The central character of the movie is Eli, a lone warrior who hunts and forages his way across a desolate and unforgiving landscape. The movie opens with a panoramic view of a ruined backdrop to what is Eli’s lonely existence. During the opening stages of the film Eli is our only evidence of human survival as we follow him as he scavenges for anything of worth, only to find that others have long since picked through the scanty remains of a lost civilisation. Along his journey Eli stumbles into a town run by Carnegie (Gary Oldman) and it’s at this point that we discover that Carnegie is hell bent on finding the book that Eli carries, as he believes it will give him power. We’re also introduced to Solara (Mila Kunis) who finds that her attraction to the mysterious Eli overpowers her obligations to Carnegie. And so the hunt begins when Carnegie sends out his marauders to seize the book from Eli. A sequence of violent encounters ensues in which the out matched and out gunned Eli either evades or despatches of Carnegie’s henchmen with brutal efficiency. As a post-apocalyptic movie fan I’ve got to say this film delivered for me on every score. From the perished scenery to the well orchestrated fight sequences, right through to the character portrayals and plot, it had everything I was looking for. Ultimately for PA movie fans this is a definite must see movie, it’s got everything you’d expect from a movie of this genre. It’s not perfect and has borrowed quite heavily from other PA movies particularly from the 80s. But that only adds to what is a somewhat recognisable experience that fans of the genre will immediately warm to. However for non PA fans I’m afraid many may not be as satisfied with The Book of Eli. And for some the religious undertones of the story might be a little too much. However saying that even though religion is a key part of the story it’s never really rammed down your throat. This is a very difficult movie to judge and being a fan of not only PA movies but also Denzel and Gary Oldman, I’m afraid my judgment is biased on this one. I might not sound overly enthusiastic about the movie but believe me quietly I am, I just don’t want to set you up for what could be a disappointment depending on your expectations of the movie. And so I’d give this one a conservative 7 out of 10 I’d have given a little more had it greater mainstream appeal.

Feast your eye’s on the trailer for the upcoming post-apocalyptic film Book of Eli. Book of Eli is directed by the Hughes brothers and stars both Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. Filming of the movie began in New Mexico in February 2009 and the film is set for release on January 15 2010. Summary: Lone warrior Eli (Denzel Washington) fights his way across the desolate wasteland of a post-apocalyptic America. Eli holds the key to saving humanity the details of which are inscribed within a book; The Book of Eli. He must protect the book as he journeys across America whilst fighting off his pursuers, hunters that have been sent out to gain possession of the book and kill its guardian. Ultimately Eli’s destiny is to protect and deliver the knowledge that can bring civilization back from the brink of destruction. Well I have to say I’m really impressed with the trailer, I really like the look and feel of the movie, which is actually way better than I expected (and I had very high expectations!) And at last we get to see Denzel kick some ass! Take a look see what you think, could this be the coolest guy ever? The Book of Eli Trailer:
