Halle Berry is in talks to take on a role in the Wachowski brothers next project Cloud Atlas. The movie is based on the hugely successful dystopian novel of the same name. If you’ve not read the book I highly recommend it, you can grab a copy or read the reviews here Described as: “An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a saviour and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.” The book contains six loosely interconnected narratives, each influenced by the actions of the past. The movie will be set over different time periods with different interweaving stories, Berry is set to take on the role of Meronym, the main character in the books post-apocalyptic segment of the story. Halle Berry won’t be the only A-list star attached to this movie, as Tom Hanks and James McAvoy have also been offered roles in the film. Hanks has been offered the role of Dr. Henry Goose and McAvoy the role of his friend and lawyer Adam Ewing. It’ll be interesting to see what the Wachowski Brothers will do with a story that is as perplexing as it is brilliant, I’m not quite sure how this will translate on to the big screen, but judging by their previous work I expect it will be a cinematic experience of epic proportions.

Joseph Kosinski the director of Tron Legacy is in negotiations with Universal to bring Horizon’s to the big screen. Horizon’s previously known as Oblivion, scripted by William Monahan and Karl Gadjusek is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie. Previously dumped by Disney because it didn’t suit their family friendly ethos the future of the project was in doubt, but by all accounts it seems Universal is more than willing to take it on, even with its hefty $100 million budget. Set in the future where the planet has become a desolate uninhabitable waste ground. The movie follows a soldier who repairs drones on the surface while the rest of humanity lives in the sky above the planet’s polluted surface. When a spacecraft crashes containing a beautiful woman an adventure begins that will change the soldiers life forever. Tom Cruise has taken on the lead role in the movie and if all goes to plan the film should go into full production in October.

Now I’m not one for peddling rumours, but I just had to comment on this one. Especially as it now seems very likely it is actually going to happen! According to Bleeding Cool it seems that Paramount and director Marc Forster have finally found some much needed funding (the movies budget is a mammoth $125 million!) for his movie adaptation of Max Brooks’s zombie novel World War Z. Which is exciting news as anyone that’s read the book would agree. If you’ve not read the book you can read the reviews or better still grab yourself a copy here It seems not only have the finances been secured but cinematographer Robert Richardson (Kill Bill) will be joining the production team and as earlier rumours suggested Brad Pitt is still set to take the lead. And as if all that wasn’t enough to digest it seems the production of the movie could begin in a matter of days rather than months! We’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Columbia Pictures’ remake of the classic sci-fi thriller Total Recall is beginning to take shape, the studio has approached Jessica Biel to star alongside Colin Farrell in the upcoming movie. Biel will be offered one of the lead female roles, however it still isn’t certain yet which one it will be. The two female roles in the original were Lori and Melina played by Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin. In the 1990s version Lori was the scheming wife of Quaid played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, while Melana was his romantic interest once he had arrived on Mars. Len Wiseman will direct, it’s still early days for the film as casting has only just gotten underway, but we’ll keep you informed of any further developments.

Well after drawing inspiration from an article I read recently, which detailed a rather large collection of movie sequels heading our way (see end of post.) I decided to do a roundup of the most highly anticipated apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movie sequels that are not only currently in development, but that also have a good chance of being developed in the very near future. And there are no less than 7, some of which you will already be aware of, some that you won’t and a few that might just surprise you. It’s also worth noting that as stated some of these movies are still very much on the drawing board, but will hopefully be in the pipeline at some stage soon. Whilst digging around I also collected a nice little list of remakes in the works too so expect that to come shortly. 28 Months Later After the huge success of the first two movies; 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, it’s hardly surprising that a third installment is currently in the works. Although it’s well noted that Fox Searchlight is eager to make the second sequel it’s still very much in the early stages. However it still remains the most highly anticipated apocalyptic movie sequel that’s on everyone’s radar. Cloverfield 2 JJ Abrams was initially very outspoken about the possibility of a sequel after the success of Cloverfield, many pundits even expected him to knock out a second movie within a year. Well 2 years on there’s still not much news regarding the sequel although Abrams has recently stated that he is currently working on ideas with director Matt Reeves. How long before it goes into production is anyone’s guess but it’s definitely on the cards. I Am Legend 2 Again details of the possible sequel or indeed more likely prequel to this movie is still very much up in the air at the moment. However judging by the rumors doing the circuit and the success of the first movie the follow up to the film will no doubt come about at some point soon. ID4-Ever (Independence Day 2) ID4-Ever is the working title that Roland Emmerich has given to his planned sequel to Independence Day. During his recent promotional work for 2012 Emmerich disclosed that he plans to make not one but two sequels to the smash hit 90s movie. He also let it known that although he hasn’t even got a script for the projects yet Will Smith will definitely be involved. Mad Max 4 – Fury Road Well it’s been a quarter of a century since we last saw the leather clad post-apocalyptic hero Max Rockatansky grace the big screen. Many fans are eagerly anticipating the continuation of this iconic series of movies. But luckily enough we won’t have to wait too long seen as the development of the movie is currently under way. Although details of the movie are a closely guarded secret, what we do know is that Mel Gibson has been replaced with Tom Hardy and it’s likely that this latest installment will follow directly on from...

The apocalyptic underwater children’s adventure novel Dark Life written by Kat Falls has been optioned by The Gotham Group Production Company. The book which is aimed at 9-11 year olds, tells the dystopian tale of a future where rising sea levels and natural disasters have forced some of the world’s populations to seek refuge on the ocean floor. The main story centres on a young boy called Ty from an underwater settlement, who together with a girl from the surface must fight to stop outlaws who threaten to destroy the boys underwater home. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein one of the producers of the project recently said of the story “We fell in love with the idea of an underwater Western,” she also went on to commend the creativity of the book’s author stating that it was a “thoroughly original world.” The producers whose past credits include The Spiderwick Chronicles are currently seeking a director for the project before presenting to the studios.
For those that don’t know, TNT has signed up for an initial 10 episodes of Steven Spielberg’s as yet untitled alien invasion series. The series which is currently being filmed stars Noah Wyle (ER) alongside Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) and is written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan.) You can view a larger image of the first shot from the show below. The series will follow a group of survivors after an apocalyptic alien invasion, who band together to form a rebellion against the otherworldly invaders. Spielberg has an obvious fascination with aliens, as his previous film and TV work demonstrates. It’s also worth noting that his 2002 series Taken became a huge hit for the sci-fi channel and I have no doubt this new one will have the same effect on TNT’s ratings. In a recent press release TNT’s executive vice president Michael Wright said of the show, “This series has the potential to be one of the most exciting and provocative shows on television,” Wright went on to say, “It grabs your heart and mind from the start and doesn’t let go. It combines personal human drama with dynamic action to create the kind of series people will be talking about the morning after. We are especially thrilled to be working once again with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television, as well as Noah Wyle and the extremely talented cast of veterans and newcomers around him.” Judging by Wright’s statement it seems that I’m not the only one excited about this new series, which is set for release some time in 2011. source: Spoiler TV via io9

After much speculation over the possible reboot of the Planet of the Apes, it’s now finally been confirmed that Twentieth Century Fox is definitely ready to go ahead with the post-apocalyptic Simian franchise. The reboot was previously thrown into doubt when the original writer and director for the movie, Scott Frank (Minority Report) left the project. However it’s just been confirmed that the project has now been handed over to Peter Chernin and that Jamie Moss (Street Kings) has also been brought in to retool Frank’s script. It’s also been reported that the projects other original scripter’s Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (The Relic, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle) were brought back to tidy up the dialogue. Code named Caesar, Frank’s original script detailed how genetic experiments performed on the apes was the cause of them gaining intelligence, which ultimately led to the rebellion and eventual dominance over humanity. According to a source who was involved in the production, the studio wanted to take the franchise in a different direction, one that Frank wasn’t willing to pursue and so they parted ways. However with the studios now apparent rush to get the project up and running again, it seems that Frank’s original Caesar concept will make it to the big screen after all, but may not be as he envisioned. Judging by the success of the recent spate of post-apocalyptic movies, Fox’s eagerness to get this project underway makes perfect sense, it’s just unfortunate that Scott Frank is no longer involved. But nevertheless I’m looking forward to seeing this latest addition to what is a classic series of post-apocalyptic movies. It’s also expected that a director will be attached to the project quite soon. We’ll keep you updated of any further developments. source: Vulture

The cable channel AMC has given the green light to a new post-apocalyptic Zombie pilot based on Robert Kirkman’s comic The Walking Dead. The pilot which will be directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) will focus on the efforts of a sheriff and his son, as they along with a group of other survivors try to get by in a world where food, water and other basic human needs are in short supply. Although Kirkman’s comic was inspired by the works of Zombie maestro George Romero, the story is very much about survival rather than zombies popping out from every direction. The pilot and possible TV series will have similarities to the current BBC TV show Survivors, in that the struggles between themselves and their efforts to survive will be the main focus of the show. I’m not sure how long we’ll have to wait for this to hit our screens but I’m already getting excited about this one. And seen as the director and production team have already been chosen and casting is currently getting underway I doubt that we’ll be waiting long. source: Variety

Isaac Marion (pictured right) who was previously selling copies of his unpublished novel from his website has recently had a succession of good news. First the publishing rights were picked up by Atria Books, who will publish in the summer and now it’s just been announced that the movie rights have also been acquired by Summit Entertainment. Not only that, Summit has already snapped up a writer and director for the film, in the form of Jonathan Levin (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.) Marion who is obviously overwhelmed by the developments, which is evident upon reading his blog, has described Warm Bodies as an existential zombie love story at the end of the world. Marion has also created an ingenious amateur Trailer for the book which you can view below. We’ll be keeping our eye on this one, as soon as any more news becomes available we’ll let you know.
