Director: Shane Acker Cast: Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau DVD / Blu-ray Release Date: December 29, 2009 Summary: In a post-apocalyptic future where humanity has become extinct, nine rag dolls (stitchpunks) are all that stands in the way of machines that have taken over the world. 9 (Elijah Wood) awakens to find himself alone in a world devoid of all life. It’s only by chance that he discovers a small community of other Stitchpunks. The dolls named by the numbers stitched onto their backs, have created a safe haven to protect themselves from the terrifying machines that now roam the Earth. 9 persuades the others that the only way to ensure their survival is to mount an offensive against the machines. What ensues is a series of battles against the machines as 9 attempts to lead his kin to victory and change the fate of mankind. Review: First let’s start with the background of this movie, the concept; turn an award winning and Oscar nominated film short into a feature length movie. Well Shane Acker’s 2005 animated short is a masterpiece of filmmaking by anyone’s standards. It’s a perfectly packaged piece of art that has an impact on the viewer and says everything it needs to in a very short running time. But extrapolating what worked effectively in the 11 minute short into a full length film was always going to be Acker’s greatest difficulty. And unfortunately as is more than evident as you watch the film that difficulty wasn’t overcome. There are points in the film that for want of a better word, drag. All the creative energy that was put into the short just wasn’t sustained throughout the 80 minute feature film. And it’s a shame that despite the unique story, stunning visuals and incredibly detailed animation it’s that which has the lasting effect on the viewer. However saying that you really can’t underestimate the visual impact of this movie, which is truly breathtaking. This kind of attention to detail is only achieved by animators who are masters of their craft and dare I say slightly OCD to boot. Each frame of this film is like a perfectly taken photo, providing visual detail that certainly wasn’t unnoticed or wasted on me. My eyes adored this movie; it’s just a pity that wasn’t enough to prevent my mind from wondering during the film. Another gripe I have with 9 is that it never really decided which audience it was targeting. It was too dark a tale for children yet not engaging enough to hold the attention of their parents and so both parties were ultimately left disappointed. Overall despite my overly negative review, which admittedly is more a venting of my disappointment, this is a movie you should see, even if it’s just for the visuals. Failing that definitely take a look at the 2005 film short which I have attached below. If you’d like to see the theatrical trailer for 9 you can...

The international trailer for the animated post-apocalyptic movie 9 has hit the net. And this trailer not only gives a greater insight to the story it also reveals some pretty nifty animation. After watching the new trailer I’ve got a feeling this movie will be all I’ve been anticipating and much more. The animation is remarkable and I really like the general look and feel of the movie. I must admit I was slightly disappointed by WALL-E (and I know these are two completely different films) although I did enjoy the movie it was lacking something… or maybe it just wasn’t edgy enough for my tastes. 9 however is a different story it seems to have all the things I’d look for in an animated movie of this genre. Take a look at the trailer and see what you think…

Take a look at the character posters from the forthcoming post-apocalyptic movie 9. You can also get to know the characters as I’ve included a bit of information about each one of them. Summary: The world’s population is decimated after military machines begin to take control of the planet. As the population nears extinction a scientist creates 9 dolls (Stitchpunks) into which he puts his soul. Surviving the global devastation the 9 are now the Earths last trace of humankind. After seeing one of these little beauties on another site and being suitably impressed, I decided to go on a mission to gather all nine posters from around the net, and here they are, including character summaries. You can click on the images if you’d like to see the pictures in more detail. So we kick off with 1-4 1 is voiced by the esteemed actor Christopher Plummer, he’s the temperamental and overbearing elder and leader of the group, 2 (voiced by Martin Landau) is a compassionate scientist and frail but intrepid explorer. 3&4 The twins; although mute and communicating only with flashing lights are studious cataloguers of the environment around them, recording and inscribing all they survey. Onto 5-7 5 (Voiced by John C Reilly) is the all-rounder his skills include engineering, inventing as well as being the healer and mentor of the group. 6 (Voiced by Crispin Glover) has an impetuous and wild nature; he’s also a seer and an artist and uses his art to express his visions which are predictions of the future. 7 (Voiced by Jennifer Connelly) is the only female of the group, she’s fearless, adventurous and brave but can also be stubborn and unreasonable, she patrols the wasteland and is prepared to die in battle. And finaly 8 and 9 8 (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) is the protector of the group and the bodyguard of 1 whom he’s prepared to die for. 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) is a considerate and caring individual and although he’s new to the group he has the skills and the capacity to lead and guide them.

US Release Date: September 9 2009 Cast: (the voices of) Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer Director: Shane Acker 9 is an animated movie both written and directed by Shane Acker, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for the film short that this feature length movie is based on. Summary: In a post-apocalyptic future where humanity has become extinct, 9 (Elijah Wood) awakens to find himself alone in a world devoid of all life. It’s only by chance that he later discovers a small community of others like him, who have created a safe haven to protect themselves from the terrifying machines, that roam the Earth with the intent of exterminating them. As their plight becomes increasingly more desperate, 9 persuades the others that the only way to ensure their survival is to mount an offensive against the machines and to eradicate them from the planet. However in a twist of fate they also discover that the survival of the planet and the future of civilization will depend on them. After a very early release of the trailer (see below) which was released around Christmas time, it’s been quite awhile since there’s been any other news about the film. It seems like it’s been a bit of a slow burner, but I’m sure all that will change in the run up to its release. It’s definitely a movie I’ve been looking forward to watching. The first time I saw the trailer I felt quite excited about the look and feel of the movie and I’m not a huge fan of animated movies. But this one has certainly got my interest; between this Terminator Salvation, The Road and 2012 we apocalyptic movie fans certainly will have been spoilt by the end of this year. Anyway here’s the trailer see what you think.
