According to Stuff.co.nz Peter Jackson has not only optioned Phillip Reeves children’s book Mortal Engines but has already begun developing it for the big screen. Taking a look at Jackson’s already busy schedule it’s hard to believe that he’s also “secretly” working on a project as big as this.

Mortal Engines is set in a post-apocalyptic future where land based cities no longer exist. Instead they’ve been replaced by mobile “traction cities.” These nomadic cities roam the planet consuming all the resources in their path, including any other cities that get in the way!

Hmm, sounds like quite a frightening premise for a children’s book, it’ll be interesting to see how Jackson translates this onto celluloid. It’s also worth noting that Mortal Engines is a series of books and it seems that Jackson is currently working on the first one. So I guess there’s scope for a new franchise here?
