Pakistani cinema goes apocalyptic with the upcoming release of Kolachi

The Pakistani movie industry is not known for its science fiction nor dystopian cinema and so the production team behind the apocalyptic movie Kolachi are taking a brave step into new territory. Not surprisingly the movie which is set for release later this year is creating quite a buzz in its home nation and is heralded as the first step into truly global cinema.

Synopsis
Kolachi is set against the backdrop of a city at war as ethnic and religious groups threaten to tear apart all semblance of social order. The world at large suffers from natural disasters and phenomenon never seen before. The spiritual and the mystics of Kolachi whisper about something greater, something darker, looming on the horizon. As scientists come to grips with the notion of a large and mysterious celestial body on the fringes of our solar system about to interact with our world in a catastrophic manner, others say the evidence and the signs are already here.

The movie contains three stories that intertwine over three days involving a collection of interrelated characters:

Scott Douglas, an Australian academic facilitating a de-radicalization program of young Islamic sympathizers who can’t seem to absolve himself from his inexplicable past;

Sabah, a political journalist who has recently returned home to Pakistan to seek redemption for leaving her brother after their parents’ death as well as her childhood love whom she is not ready to face;

Shah, her brother who has learnt to live his life unanswerable to anyone including himself;

Imran, the mystic musician who consolidates his transcendental embodiment of Sufism with rock music and Riz, the tortured protagonist and narrator of sorts who is haunted by his visions of the end times.

A representative of Bodhicitta Works, the studio behind the CGI in the movie had this to say,

It seems as though this film has been tackled intelligently. The end of the world brought about by the passing by of Planet X through our solar system. It causes everything from solar flares which black out the world, volcanic activity, tsunamis, meteor showers, super hurricanes and earthquakes… It’s a Pulp Fiction meets Deep Impact, Crash meets 2012. Let’s wait and see if it lives up to its expectations. The trailer released is just a concept whilst waiting for the real deal.

      It is worthy to mention the fact that the actual film industry in Pakistan (generally known as Lollywood) has churned out a whopping 1 sci fi endeavor in the past two decades.

      THIS film however comes not from the Lollywood entity, as the entity has lost credibility and has dwindled to a few silly Indian movie style (bollywood) musicals. No, This comes from a new crop of digital film makers, emboldened by cheaper technologies and cameras. This would be atleast the third attempt at sci fi/post apocalyptic story telling from the young filmmakers of Karachi and Lahore. The old cinema simply does not exist in that country.
