This 50s sci-fi classic is Based on the speculative novel When Worlds Collide by Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer. Originally acquired by Paramount Studios the project remained on the shelf for nearly two decades, until producer George Pal took it up after the huge success of his movie Destination Moon (an excellent movie by the way, I highly recommend it.)

 

When scientist Dr. Cole Henderson discovers that a planet is on a collision course with the Earth he tries to warn the authorities, but no one takes his warnings seriously, except for a rich wheelchair bound investor, Stanton. Who in a bid to escape the impending catastrophe funds the building of a colossal spaceship, in the hope of transporting a select few to another habitable planet. When the validity of Henderson’s prediction becomes unquestionably obvious, a global lottery is held to decide who will be among the passengers of the spaceship and ultimately escape the disaster.

 

This is a classic movie that is a MUST view for any fan boy of the genre. It is a bit dated or it would have scored a higher rating, but it is a solid movie, well acted and for the time, well scripted with good effects.
