Plot:

Originally aired on the BBC in the 1980s this film Shocked an entire generation. It’s a realistic and harrowing account of the effects of nuclear war and its victims.

The film follows two families as their lives are dramatically changed, when all out nuclear war results in their city (Sheffield) being hit by a nuclear missile.
What ensues is a horrific account of horrendous deaths, grief, starvation and radiation sickness, and resultant acts of utter desperation and hopelessness. The film closes by documenting their progress in the years following the initial attack. Revealing a country and population that’s slowly decaying to a level of existence not seen since the dark ages

Although the movie is now very dated it still leaves you speechless as the credits roll. It’s one of the most haunting movies I’ve ever seen and a true testament to the folly of nuclear war and war in general.

+3 #1 Roger 2009-07-05 23:12 I agree this movie was very haunting. After watching this film I was very disturbed by the thought of nuclear war. It takes away the Hollywood glamor and shows the reality of such a situation. Quote

+2 #2 Richie B 2010-03-26 05:51 Wow, this is the most powerful nuclear/apocalyptic type movie I have ever seen, and I have seen them all. It does truly show the folly of nuclear war and it's terrible consequences in a a brutally truthful way. Quote

+2 #3 David 2010-10-04 00:52 Easily one of the most shocking and thought provoking films I've ever seen. It will leave you feeling disturbed but in a way that really gets the mind going - certainly made me hope that no one pushes the big red button to launch the nukes! Quote

+1 #4 Eamonn 2010-12-05 18:26 Excellent film. Wathced it as a child and was really affected by it. Watched it twice in recent years and have been impressed by its realism, honesty and sensitivity to the relationships between private experience and global catastrophe. Nothing comes close. Quote

0 #6 Matt 2011-05-18 16:20 It it an excellent film despite it dating quite badly. It is interesting to compare it with The War Game documentary from 1965 - the film that was banned from 20 years by the BBC that inspired it. The dramatic realism of Threads is in contrast to The War Game rather theatrical documentary approach. The War Game is probably more shocking but the Threads drama approach probably meant more people engaged with the potential threat. Quote

0 #7 Steve 2011-07-05 18:50 Having being born in 1985, I did not get to see this when it was aired on BBC. In fact it was only last year I heard about it and decided to go hunting for a copy.

Let me start by saying this film shocked me. Not by how good it was but by how realistic and disturbing it was. After watching it I just sat there thinking to myself 'what if?'. Threads basically gives us a play by play of what would happen if a nuclear bomb was dropped over a populated area (or anywhere for that matter).

I'm not going to ruin it for you by blurting out specific parts, this film has to be seen to be believed. Its so realistic that I can only imagine how people felt back in 1984 when the cold war was still ongoing. It is very well acted, very well shot and the special effects will take your breathe away.

I personally believe this is something everyone must see. It doesn't hold anything back, and will live long in your memory after you've watched. Don't hope for a happy ending or anything like that, because hope is something Threads does not give.
