The Stand
Original title: The Stand
Category 1990s , Plagues , Post Apocalyptic , TV Series
Year: 1994
Country: US
Time: 360 minutes
Cast:
Gary Sinise, Jamey Sheridan, Molly Ringwald, Ruby Dee, Corin Nemec

Plot:

After a killer virus is released from a government Lab almost all of America’s population is wiped out.

The few survivors immune to the virus journey across the country to a small town in the mid west. But their hope of rebuilding civilisation is shattered as it soon becomes apparent that their fight for survival is only just beginning.

A tale of good against evil this is one of the best Stephen King stories to be translated onto the small screen.  Being in the format of a mini series rather than a feature film it allowed time for an even greater development of the characters and the story. Stephen King also has small role in this.

+1 #1 Ste Jacobs 2009-07-02 13:33 This is absolutley fantastic. I remember watching this back in the 90's when it was first shown on BBC 1, I was absolutely gripped by the story and the characters. One of the best mini series I've ever seen. I think it was this and 12 Monkeys that got me into the whole apocalyptic movie thing. Ste Quote

I'm sure hardcore Stephen King fans or budding actors will complain about the plot details, producers trimmings or wooden acting.

It deserves high scores on both accounts since this was a 1990's heavily censored primetime show.

When 2013 comes around "The Gunslinger" will appear here… to much more decisive P.A rants

0 #3 Okie Mae 2011-10-10 21:44 Love this movie. Love the characters. Love the scenes of devastation in NY & Vegas. Love Mother Abagail and her music. Love all the music in this movie. It's about friendship, love, and loyalty and how we must not waste time - make your stand against evil now. We all may have to start over someday and be a force for good in this world. Quote

0 #4 stu 2011-10-28 08:38 My all-time favorite movie (and book)!

This film is an absolutely great collection of character studies along with the perfect story. Very good filming for a low budget, mid-90s, TV miniseries. Incredible acting by Ruby Dee, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, Kathy Bates, Adam Storke, Ossie Davis, Miguel Ferrer, Jamey Sheridan and the ravens (actually crows). Also, the soundtrack was top-notch.

I only wish the movie was at least twice as long…I wanted more, much more! Six hours wasn't nearly enough.

I'm looking forward to the major motion picture trilogy beginning in 2013 (hopefully)…but there's no way they'll find equals to Ruby Dee and Gary Sinise.
