This post-apocalyptic French film sets a single man trying to survive by avoiding gangs of thugs and slowly scavenging for odd supplies. Everyone is practically mute have lost the ability to speak except for a few grunts and groans. There are few if any women.
"The Man" is collecting parts for a homemade ultra light. HIs escape from immediate danger in his ultra light does him no real good as he finds a land void and barren. Mechanical failure lands The Man near a new set of tribulations. The Man encounters a "The Brute" and "The Doctor".
After narrowly escaping death at the hands of the brute, the man is taken in by the doctor. The doctor happens to be hiding something the brute wants. Eventually building up his strength, the man and the doctor become friends. The doctor reveals his secret, a woman.
The doctor is killed by a freakish accident and the man must face the brute. Although victorious, the man is unable to save the woman from the brute.
Returning to his original home, the man confronts and over comes the leader of the gang of thugs and takes his place.
Review:
This movie is all about visual, sounds and emotions. Any grunting or groaning is just to reinforce for you the audience what you already know.
There are just bizarre events happening all the time that may or may not impact the story line. Raining fish, rock storms and masked men walking through the devastation gassing all they see.
The movie has the wonderful Jean Reno as “The Brute” and lots of interesting sets that are full of devastation. I thought the generic nature of the characters, The Man, The Brute etc reminded me of the movie The Road with the characters; Man, Boy, Veteran and Old Man.
If you get a chance watch this movie.
