The Dead Outside
Original title: The Dead Outside
Category Zombies , Post Apocalyptic , Plagues , 2008 , 2000s
Year: 2008
Country: UK
Time: 86 minutes
Director: Kerry Anne Mullaney
Cast:
Sandra Louise Douglas, Alton Milne , Sharon Osdin

Plot:

After a neurological pandemic (similar to the rage virus in 28 days later) infects most of the population, Daniel leaves his home in an effort to get some distance between him and the infected that are concentrated in the urban areas. On his journey into the countryside he comes across a farmhouse with a generator and supplies and decides to hold up there for a while, unaware that 16 year old April has already taken up residence. The film follows the two as they learn to trust each other while protecting themselves from the infected outside. All seems to be going well until a third person turns up and upsets the delicate relationship between the two.

Review:
This is a Very bleak and atmospheric movie and being set in the Scottish highlands just adds to that sense of isolation and the claustrophobia of the characters that have become all but prisoners in an isolated farmhouse.

This is not your typical zombie movie, there isn't much in the way of flesh eating goriness and I think that’s reflected in the ratings on IMDB as horror fans were disappointed by the lack of violence. This is however a good character study of the effects of fear, not just of what lies in wait outside but also the fear of loneliness in a world turned upside down, where the biggest threat may actually not be losing your life but losing your sanity.

Overall I’d say this is a must see movie for true PA movie fans, you really won’t be disappointed. However horror fans might find the film slow going with not enough thrills along the way.

0 #1 ElGooch 2012-01-02 17:34 Just finished watching this based on the review above. I thought it was ok. It wasn't bad at all, but I just felt like it didn't flow well, and left me confused at times. There are moments when the movie flashes back, and it just doesn't seem to accomplish what they want.

That being said, it's worth a watch. The movie definitely gives you that feeling of how isolated, and unpredictable a PA world would be.

Not the best movie, but worth a watch if you're in a PA mood, and haven't seen it.

I agree with ElGooch, the flash back scenes are poorly done and do not deliver insight into the history of the characters.

I was OK with the low budget and low gore factor. It is the story that counts. I did not feel that the story delivered. Additionally I am a Yank and had a hard time with the heavy accents.

This is not a "must see" film. It is not even a rainy day film.
