Country: US
Time: 127 minutes

Cast:
Steve Guttenberg, John Cullum, JoBeth Williams, John Lithgow, Jason Robards

Plot:

Originally a made for TV movie this controversial film shocked America, as it was the first film to realistically portray the effects of nuclear war on the general public.

This movie focuses on the after effects of nuclear war on society. It follows a few survivors as the wake up to a world where the unimaginable has become reality. Mushroom clouds bellowing smoke in the distance and an atmosphere choked in radioactive dust causing near invisibility are just a few of the harsh conditions these survivors must brave as they wander through the ruined landscape searching for help and missing loved ones.

Although not as gritty as Threads (the British equivalent,) it certainly was a wake up call to many Americans as was the movie Testament

0 #1 Angie 2009-07-02 13:32 Thanks for this site. I remember seeing this as a child and really loving it, but I couldn't remember the title. This is the one with the two children who survived, and they went to the grocery store to try and find food, right? I hope this is it, because I've been searching for a while. Quote

Angie, We had a few problems with the comments system, which we've just got back up running again today. It's been awhile since I've seen this but I'm quite sure it's not this one, but I may be wrong. Once you've watched it please check back and let us know, maybe some other visitors to the site will know the film you're looking for, sorry I couldn't be more help.

+1 #3 Terry 2010-04-29 03:24 When "The Day After" first aired I worked at the local EMA (then known as Civil Defense). Took a couple months for the phones to stop ringing. Loved the movie and the overtime checks. Quote

0 #4 okie mae 2011-11-06 17:48 What a great movie. Great character development so you really care about this family and their suffering. Love the scene where the wife is in total denial that there's going to be a nuclear war, going about cooking for her daughter's wedding, making beds, then just breaks down bellowing and crying as her husband drags her to the basement. Very powerful scene, great actress. Many excellent scenes like that. Horrifyingly realistic. Quote
