A small group of military personnel seek refuge from the plague of zombies that have begun to take over the planet. Having come across a video promising safety on a small Island off the east coast of America the group decide to take the risk and head over. There they find two feuding families that have very differing approaches on what to do with the living dead. It soon becomes clear that the zombies are the least of their problems.
Review:
This is George A. Romero's newest instalment (as of 2011) of his infamous 'of the dead' series. Being a big fan of his earlier films (and a big zombie film fan), I picked up a copy of this on ebay shortly after its release. You can probably guess from the rating that I wasn't very impressed.
I'm not going to give away much of the storyline but basically its a side story to Romero's previous movie 'Diary of the Dead'. If you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about when you start watching Survival of the Dead. My biggest problem with this film is that its just not at all scary, not even in the slightest. Remember the tension you feel when you watch a zombie film and there's people surrounded by hoards of the living dead?? Well there's more tension in an elastic band than in this movie.
Basically Romero delves too deep into the complexities of society and forgets this is supposed to be a horror. The movie does get a bit better towards the end but all in all was a disappointment. Although I guess the special effects aren't too bad, but you expect that in this day and age.
Probably worth the watch if you're a zombie/Romero fan, but don't expect another Night of the Living Dead. I'm pretty biased when it comes to zombie films so I tried to ignore this when rating...and what I was left with was 4/10. Sorry George.

However, it is something like a cult movie. I think some one might actually like it's component of not being scary. Quote
