Soylent Green takes place in the not so distant future in New York City. (Of course this is the 1973 version of the future). Due to the depletion of the world’s natural resources, and the population boom, there is a shortage of work and food. People are forced to eat government rations titled "Soylent." These "Soy" products have got different colors and are advertised all over the city. "Real" food is hard to find and is only bought by the rich and powerful. Robert Thorn (played by Charlton Heston) is a New York City police officer and while he is trying to keep the peace he and his housemate stumble on to a government conspiracy and Thorn has to find out the truth before he will stop his search.

It is hard to give a great description of this film without giving away spoilers but, it was one of the first dystopia/apocalyptic films I ever saw and really turned me on to the genre. It was the final apocalyptic movie that Charlton Heston starred in and it was a hidden gem that many people aren't aware is out there. (It can be debated that "Earthquake" released in 1974 with Heston was also an apocalyptic movie but, I deny that claim). If you are looking for a great movie from the PA or Dystopia genre to watch this is the movie for you. It has lots of twists and turns and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s hard to fit this movie into a particular theme but I would say it would be environmental or humanity.
