Panic in Year Zero
Original title: Panic in Year Zero
Category 1960s , Nuclear , Post Apocalyptic
Year: 1962
Country: US
Director: Ray Milland
Cast:
Ray Milland, Frankie Avalon, Joan Freeman, Richard Garland, Jean Hagen, Mary Mitchel

Plot:

As nuclear bombs explode in nearby Los Angeles, A father tries to protect his family and ensure their survival by taking them away from the city.

As they journey towards the countyside the father soon adopts a survivalist attitude and does everything he thinks necessary to keep his family safe, even to the detriment of others.

I’m not quite sure what to make of the message this movie tries to deliver, the father played by Ray Milland (who is also the director) really does go to some extreme lengths in order to protect his family, which admittedly is justified at certain points in the movie, but at many other times it isn’t and innocent people are endangered as a result, but Milland seems to applaud this behaviour, almost as if this is the way a good father should react in this kind of situation. I can't help but feel that the same outcome could have been achieved with a less aggressive approach that would have resulted in fewer meaningless deaths along the way.

However that aside overall this is an excellent movie that shows the harsh reality of the effects of nuclear war on both a family and society.

There is no way of knowing how someone would react in a situation that has never happened this is one mans opinion. I agree that it would be a very violent time and that people would react in a over protective way considering the situation you would be in. For me a less violent version of this would not seem as realistic or be so profound. Quote
