After a deadly new disease is discovered in Zaire, Africa army virologist Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) is sent in to investigate. After assessing the situation Daniels returns to the US to warn his superiors. But his request to put out an alert are denied as his superiors believe that being non-airborne the virus poses little threat.
However an infected monkey is smuggled into the country and later released into some woods in California. Both the monkey’s handler and the residents of a small town near the park become ill. As the days go by all those infected die and the virus begins to spread through the town at an alarming rate leading to martial law and a quarantine being imposed. With the situation now spiralling out of control the authorities consider cleansing the area with a military bombardment.

This was a good movie but whilst watching you can’t help but feel it could have been so much better. The first half is done rather well as it sets the scene for the coming carnage. But after that it seems to loose some of its momentum which is a shame. The film is ultimately saved by the A list actors who put in some great performances but there’s only so much great acting ability can do, as the main problems with this movie lay in the story and script which needed much more development.
Overall the potential is there but it is never realised however being in an age of bird-flu and swine-flu and the like this movie is just as poignant today as it was back in the mid 90s.
