When the dead begin to rise a group of strangers take refuge in a rural house. Barricading themselves inside, they do whatever it takes to survive the night as an ever increasing horde of the undead surround them.
Review:
Directed by George A. Romero, Night of the Living Dead is one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. Shot with a pretty meagre budget, it is the standard to which all zombie films are compared.
I'll start out by giving you my verdict. As good as Dawn of the Dead was, this for me is the greatest zombie movie ever made. In my view almost everything in Night of the living dead is done to perfection. The acting is superb, the tension is never-ending and its scary as hell. Even the music is perfect, and only adds to the tension.
The story is brilliant. Upon reading the plot above can you think of a better scenario for a zombie film? OK being stuck in a shopping centre is pretty cool too (dawn of the dead), but the setting of a small house in the middle of nowhere is a pretty scary thought, don't you think?
This isn't the goriest film of all time, but when the gore comes its definitely not mediocre. The character development (and the characters themselves) are excellent. The ending packs quite a punch too, but not in a horror sense. Watch it and you'll know what I mean.
Night of the living dead is proof you don't need grade A actors and colossal budget to make a masterpiece. Don't be put off by the fact its in black and white, I actually think it makes it even scarier.
A diamond, 10/10
