All cares and pleasures are provided for in this futuristic domed city, but no one lives past their 30th birthday. Each citizen has a "life clock" implanted in their hand that flashes red on "Last Day," when they are to partake in the elaborate Carousel ceremony. Here they exterminated, yet are supposed to experience a euphoric Renewal at the moment of death. However, some do not submit to the ceremony but instead run for their lives to the abandoned and industrial areas of the vast city. The Sandmen men are an elite group of citizens whose job it is to hunt down the "runners" and exterminate them. Logan 5 is a Sandman who himself becomes a runner. Together with Jessica 6, Logan searches for "Sanctuary," a rumored runners' haven, and eventually escapes the city. Once outside, Logan and Jessica discover their life clocks have stopped working. They soon come upon the ruins of ancient civilization, which we recognize as the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capital Building, covered with ivy and crumbling with decay. While exploring the ruins, they come upon and old man with a bunch of cats -- two things they have never seen before. They convince him to come back to the city to show the others that people can live and grow old, and do not have to die.

This movie is an absolute classic. It won several awards for visual effects, the most striking of which are the views of an ancient, decaying Washington D.C. -- amazing even by today's standards. The domed city and its inhabitants have a very "70's" look to them, and there are definitely aspects of this movie that could be considered "psychedelic." At its heart, Logan's Run is about a struggle for human rights -- freedom from both the literal and figurative walls of the domed city.
