This is a must see big budget apocalyptic disaster movie from visionary producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves, which follows a group of Manhattan residents who’s friend Rob Hawkins’ leaving party is cut short after all hell breaks loose when an earth shattering explosion occurs across the city.
The party goers and neighbouring residents pour onto the streets as they try to make sense of what’s happening. Panic quickly turns to fear and horror when the growing crowd gets their first glimpse of the terror that has descended upon New York, now running for their lives they along with the rest of the population begin to evacuate the area. The movie follows Rob and a small group of friends as they attempt to escape the city and save his ex girlfriend who's become trapped in her apartment across town.
Filmed using a hand held camera the look and feel of this movie is like no other disaster film you’d have ever seen, it’s a very unique experience not just because of the concept but the story itself, which begins almost like a drama about young Manhattan professionals before explosively transforming into a fast paced, blink and you’ll miss it movie that keeps you right on the edge of your seat.
If you enjoyed this movie I’d recommend Diary of the Dead which is filmed using the same hand held camera technique.
