Katsuhiro Omoto’s classic Akira set the standard for all Manga and Anime movies to follow. The story begins with the explosive battle between two rival biker gangs as they ride through the post-nuclear streets of Neo-Tokyo.

 

The cyber-punk gang member’s rivalry and the arrival of a group of children with psychic abilities begins to awaken the dormant super human powers of Tetsuo, one of the gang members. As his power grows increasingly stronger he begins too loose grip of reality and control of his own abilities and soon becomes a threat to all humanity.

 

A true classic that was way ahead of it’s time and still very relevant today, this movie helped bring animated films to a new and exciting level of reality with animated special effects that had never been seen before. I would recommend also watching the subtitled version if you get chance as some of the humour is lost in the American dubbed version.
