Matt Reeves to Write/Direct Alien Invasion Movie
Matt Reeves the director of Cloverfield has joined forces with Universal Pictures to write and direct a new movie based on the short story 8 o’clock in the morning. A story which was also the inspiration for the 1980s John Carpenter movie They Live.
The story centres around a man who comes to realize that aliens have integrated themselves into society and that this alien presence is controlling the destiny humanity. In the 1988 John Carpenter movie the aliens who looked like humans were revealed by wearing a special pair of glasses. However in a recent interview with Deadline, Reeves has stated that this will not be a remake of the movie but a whole new adaptation based on the original short story.
Reeves also went on to say,
“I saw an opportunity to do a movie that was very point-of-view driven, a psychological science fiction thriller that explores this guy’s nightmare… There could be a desperate love story at the center of this. Carpenter took a satirical view of the material and the larger political implication that we’re being controlled. I am very drawn to the emotional side, the nightmare experience with the paranoia of Invasion of the Body Snatchers or a Roman Polanski-style film.”
Reeves also stated during the interview that he was beginning work on the project immediately, so as soon as there’s more information we’ll let you know.
On a side note during the interview Reeves was also asked about a Cloverfield sequel, he said that it was still very much on the drawing board.
