There’s a new series coming soon from none other than Bryan Singer, the man behind the X-Men. I couldn’t be more excited to see him returning to some pure science fiction, this time with an end-of-the-world flavor. It’s called “H+” and it takes the technology-as-savior path to the apocalypse. The series is adopting a YouTube only distribution model. Time will tell if this helps or hinders its viewership. Regardless, the show looks really strong. I like the plausible take on the technology angle. A mixture of bioengineering and the internet is probably where we are heading. Here’s the official synopsis: A groundbreaking new series by acclaimed producer Bryan Singer, H+: The Digital Series takes viewers on a journey into an apocalyptic future where technology has begun to spiral out of control… a future where the world’s population has retired its cell phones and laptops in favor of stunning new device by Hplus Nano Teoranta, an innovative technology company that has found a way to connect the Internet to the human mind 24 hours a day. Have a look at the trailer below. I love the soundtrack! Let us know what you think of it:

There is nothing scarier than real life. You can see that in trends in current zombie movies, moving away from the Haitian concept of supernaturally created zombies toward a sense of contagion. Death being something you can catch, or in the case of ‘28 Days Later’ something that can run after and catch you. We fear disease as we fear death and contagion appears the ultimate monster, an unseen enemy, hiding in the shadows. I first read about Ebola virus as a teenager when I picked up the ‘The Hot Zone’ by Richard Preston. I remember it as an exhilarating fascinating read but with the invincibility of youth as much as I recognised that the book was about reality it still remained somehow a fiction without connection to my real life, rereading it as an adult in research of this article I discovered a real life horror more profound than anything I have ever seen at the movies or picked up in a library. Ebola is a filovirus. It is one of a family of haemorrhagic fevers that originate in the rain forests and are believed now to be carried by fruit bats. They have a devastating effect on the human body. Some of the symptoms will be familiar to you from movies like ‘Outbreak’ and ‘Contagion’, headaches, reddening of the eyes, some flu like symptoms and then bruising, bleeding from the nose and convulsions but the real symptoms of the disease are far worse than anything those films ever depicted. It would be impossible to describe it better than Richard Preston so the following is a direct quote from ‘The Hot Zone’: ‘The skin bubbles up into a sea of tiny white blisters mixed with red spots known as a maculopapular rash. This rash has been likened to tapioca pudding. Spontaneous rips appear in the skin, and haemorrhagic blood pours from the rips. The red spots grow and merge to become huge, spontaneous bruises, and the skin goes soft and pulpy, and can tear off if it’s touched with any kind of pressure. Your mouth bleeds, and you bleed around your teeth, and you may have haemorrhages from the salivary glands – literally every opening in the body bleeds, no matter how small. The surface of the tongue turns brilliant red and then sloughs off and is swallowed or spat out. It is said to be extraordinarily painful to loose the surface of one’s tongue. The tongue’s skin may be torn off during rushes of black vomit. The back of the throat and the lining of the windpipe may also slough off and the dead tissue slides down the windpipe into the lungs or is coughed up with sputum. Your heart bleeds into itself; the heart muscle softens and haemorrhages into it’s chambers, and blood squeezes out of the heart muscle as it beats, and it floods the chest cavity.’ This is a just a small part of an extended and terrifying description of what the Ebola Virus does to...

Interview With Author Shaun Penney on his Post-Apocalyptic Novel, “The Death of Eve”

Shaun Penney Interview

First I’d like to thank author Shaun Penney for agreeing to talk to us about his post-apocalyptic novel, “The Death of Eve”. Shaun, could you tell us a bit about the world you’ve created? My pleasure. The Death of Eve takes place a hundred years in the future. In America, only four domed cities are known to survive after the effects of World War Three from decades past. Unforeseen events from the war have led to the discovery that mostly only male children have been born leading to a decrease in the female population. Efforts of creating women through test tube procedures were carried out only to be unknowingly halted after years of successful results. A military general with a shrouded past convinces the four separate domes to lead a team of doctors and scientists in the research of finding the answers while housing the remaining women in a hidden medical dome for their safety and for testing. The story begins two decades after this hidden fifth dome is created when the last of the women arrive. Where did you get the ideas for the book? I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic storytelling. I enjoy all forms of it and one day asked myself, how would a world react if there were only a few hundred women left in a dystopian future? This theme has been utilized in the work of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”. My story focuses on a wide scale conspiracy and pits the last remnants of women all under one roof to survive in. Inspiration for my main characters came from the background story I had read concerning the formation and history of the Russian musical act t.A.T.u. I also wanted to introduce a new spin on an old form of combat specifically with katanas. By outlawing firearms in this future I made katanas a special weapon enforced by an elite squad of soldiers known as Sashurai. The blades use electro magnetism to manipulate metallic objects and as a result are much more potent and powerful weapons than their original forms. A lot of post-apocalyptic fiction is written with a specific warning in mind. Do you feel that your novel is closely connected to events in today’s society and if so, what sort of thoughts would you like it to inspire in its readers? I did not focus my story to mirror today’s events. I wanted to distance the world we know to the world that is in The Death of Eve as much as possible. I stripped away the main form of federal government and returned society into city states operating through trade and adopting laws that sometimes adapt into each dome. Every storyteller who utilizes a “World War Three” scenario breaks the world down and slowly builds it back up again either making it stronger, or in some cases making it worse. In this future, old racisms die, but new racisms are born. Animal instincts are suppressed only to return in unsettling ways....

The acclaimed horror/comedy script Boy Scouts Vs. Zombies has been gathering dust since it made it onto the Black List back in 2010. However the project has now gained a director in the form of Etan Cohen, a co-writer of the hit comedy Tropic Thunder, so we shouldn’t be waiting too long before it hits the cinema. The movie will follow a group of boy scouts whose campsite is invaded by a horde of zombies, leaving them no option but to use their outdoor skills to both defend themselves and rescue a group of girl scouts. The script which was originally written by Carrie Evans and Emi Mochizuki will be reworked by Lona Williams (Drop Dead Gorgeous) under the watchful eye of Etan Cohen (pictured left,) who will make his directorial debut on this project. I liked Tropic Thunder so knowing that Cohen is supervising a rewrite of the script is a good sign. And I normally get turned off whenever I see “vs Zombies” in a movie title (too many flashbacks of low budget horror films,) but judging by the talent involved in this, it will be quality and sounds like fun. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments.

Over four years in the making I am Alive which is set for release tomorrow (March 7) has not only captivated the post-apocalyptic games enthusiasts; it’s gotten the whole gaming community eagerly awaiting its release. And that’s mostly thanks to Ubisoft’s tireless efforts to keep the public’s interest in the game by ramping up the marketing campaign; releasing multiple Dev videos, trailers and timely released screenshots. But even with all this eye candy to keep them going, it’s been a long wait for fans who were first introduced to the game by Darkworks at the E3 way back in 2008. Here’s the official summary for the game, One year after a worldwide cataclysmic event that wiped out most of the human race, a man struggles for survival in a desolate city as he tries to reunite with his long lost wife and daughter. In this post-apocalyptical tale, there are no supernatural threats, just an everyman who faces a decaying and hazardous world and humanity’s darkest inclinations. Will you hang on to your humanity and help strangers or are you ready to sacrifice others in order to survive? You can find the trailer for the game below along with a five minute Developer Diary which gives an even greater insight into the post-apocalyptic environment of the game. Ubisoft have also released a free companion app which is available on iTunes for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. You can download the free app here I am Alive will be available on Xbox Live tomorrow, Playstation network users will have to wait a little while longer. You can find more information on the official website I Am Alive – Trailer I Am Alive – Final Developer Diary

Brooks McClaren has signed up to write the script for director Mike McCoy’s new apocalyptic movie, God’s Gulch. Here’s the official summary, “In the wake of the entire computer network shutting down and the ensuing economic and societal collapse, a group must come together to fight for their survival.” It’s expected that production will begin in 2013 after McCoy’s finished his latest project. Although God’s Gulch was jointly the idea of both McCoy (Act of Valor) and McClaren, the acclaimed writer (McClaren – pictured left) will write the script himself. Which is good news as it’s well known that he has a thing for post-apocalyptic movies having also written the script for How It Ends; another PA movie which we will no doubt be covering extensively when it goes into production (hopefully next year.) How It Ends made it onto the 2010 ‘Black List’ (Hollywood’s list of best unproduced scripts) and is described as a post-apocalyptic story, that follows a man who must make “a perilous journey halfway across the country to return to his pregnant wife in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event.” It’s already been picked up by Sierra/Affinity and as stated should also be going into production in 2013. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments. source: Deadline
