First I’d like to thank author Shaun Penney for agreeing to talk to us about his post-apocalyptic novel, “The Death of Eve”. Shaun, could you tell us a bit about the world you’ve created? My pleasure. The Death of Eve takes place a hundred years in the future. In America, only four domed cities are known to survive after the effects of World War Three from decades past. Unforeseen events from the war have led to the discovery that mostly only male children have been born leading to a decrease in the female population. Efforts of creating women through test tube procedures were carried out only to be unknowingly halted after years of successful results. A military general with a shrouded past convinces the four separate domes to lead a team of doctors and scientists in the research of finding the answers while housing the remaining women in a hidden medical dome for their safety and for testing. The story begins two decades after this hidden fifth dome is created when the last of the women arrive. Where did you get the ideas for the book? I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic storytelling. I enjoy all forms of it and one day asked myself, how would a world react if there were only a few hundred women left in a dystopian future? This theme has been utilized in the work of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”. My story focuses on a wide scale conspiracy and pits the last remnants of women all under one roof to survive in. Inspiration for my main characters came from the background story I had read concerning the formation and history of the Russian musical act t.A.T.u. I also wanted to introduce a new spin on an old form of combat specifically with katanas. By outlawing firearms in this future I made katanas a special weapon enforced by an elite squad of soldiers known as Sashurai. The blades use electro magnetism to manipulate metallic objects and as a result are much more potent and powerful weapons than their original forms. A lot of post-apocalyptic fiction is written with a specific warning in mind. Do you feel that your novel is closely connected to events in today’s society and if so, what sort of thoughts would you like it to inspire in its readers? I did not focus my story to mirror today’s events. I wanted to distance the world we know to the world that is in The Death of Eve as much as possible. I stripped away the main form of federal government and returned society into city states operating through trade and adopting laws that sometimes adapt into each dome. Every storyteller who utilizes a “World War Three” scenario breaks the world down and slowly builds it back up again either making it stronger, or in some cases making it worse. In this future, old racisms die, but new racisms are born. Animal instincts are suppressed only to return in unsettling ways....

The acclaimed horror/comedy script Boy Scouts Vs. Zombies has been gathering dust since it made it onto the Black List back in 2010. However the project has now gained a director in the form of Etan Cohen, a co-writer of the hit comedy Tropic Thunder, so we shouldn’t be waiting too long before it hits the cinema. The movie will follow a group of boy scouts whose campsite is invaded by a horde of zombies, leaving them no option but to use their outdoor skills to both defend themselves and rescue a group of girl scouts. The script which was originally written by Carrie Evans and Emi Mochizuki will be reworked by Lona Williams (Drop Dead Gorgeous) under the watchful eye of Etan Cohen (pictured left,) who will make his directorial debut on this project. I liked Tropic Thunder so knowing that Cohen is supervising a rewrite of the script is a good sign. And I normally get turned off whenever I see “vs Zombies” in a movie title (too many flashbacks of low budget horror films,) but judging by the talent involved in this, it will be quality and sounds like fun. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments.

Over four years in the making I am Alive which is set for release tomorrow (March 7) has not only captivated the post-apocalyptic games enthusiasts; it’s gotten the whole gaming community eagerly awaiting its release. And that’s mostly thanks to Ubisoft’s tireless efforts to keep the public’s interest in the game by ramping up the marketing campaign; releasing multiple Dev videos, trailers and timely released screenshots. But even with all this eye candy to keep them going, it’s been a long wait for fans who were first introduced to the game by Darkworks at the E3 way back in 2008. Here’s the official summary for the game, One year after a worldwide cataclysmic event that wiped out most of the human race, a man struggles for survival in a desolate city as he tries to reunite with his long lost wife and daughter. In this post-apocalyptical tale, there are no supernatural threats, just an everyman who faces a decaying and hazardous world and humanity’s darkest inclinations. Will you hang on to your humanity and help strangers or are you ready to sacrifice others in order to survive? You can find the trailer for the game below along with a five minute Developer Diary which gives an even greater insight into the post-apocalyptic environment of the game. Ubisoft have also released a free companion app which is available on iTunes for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. You can download the free app here I am Alive will be available on Xbox Live tomorrow, Playstation network users will have to wait a little while longer. You can find more information on the official website I Am Alive – Trailer I Am Alive – Final Developer Diary

Brooks McClaren has signed up to write the script for director Mike McCoy’s new apocalyptic movie, God’s Gulch. Here’s the official summary, “In the wake of the entire computer network shutting down and the ensuing economic and societal collapse, a group must come together to fight for their survival.” It’s expected that production will begin in 2013 after McCoy’s finished his latest project. Although God’s Gulch was jointly the idea of both McCoy (Act of Valor) and McClaren, the acclaimed writer (McClaren – pictured left) will write the script himself. Which is good news as it’s well known that he has a thing for post-apocalyptic movies having also written the script for How It Ends; another PA movie which we will no doubt be covering extensively when it goes into production (hopefully next year.) How It Ends made it onto the 2010 ‘Black List’ (Hollywood’s list of best unproduced scripts) and is described as a post-apocalyptic story, that follows a man who must make “a perilous journey halfway across the country to return to his pregnant wife in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event.” It’s already been picked up by Sierra/Affinity and as stated should also be going into production in 2013. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments. source: Deadline

Last night’s episode saw the group at odds with each other over the fate of Randall. Dale being the usual moral compass of the group fought for Randall’s life, which made it even more shocking that it was he and not Randall that checked-out in the end. Next week’s episode Better Angels, will see the gang barely having time to mourn the loss of Dale before the group faces yet another threat. You can watch the preview for that episode below. Here’s the official summary for next week’s show: Someone dangerous may be loose near the farm; Rick, Shane, Daryl and Glenn keep the group safe.
New Zealand

There’s a new apocalyptic film coming from New Zealand, called Existence (Facebook page). While still too early in the film’s development, the filmmakers contacted us and were kind enough to share some details. In the coming weeks, we’ll post more production notes. For now, we have this interview and photo gallery. ApocalypicMovies.com: Can you explain your film’s genre, Salvagepunk Western? Director Juliet Bergh: “In effect ‘Existence’ takes Western themes and sets it in a post apocalyptic future with a salvagepunk aesthetic. Salvagepunk is a term coined by theorist Evan Calder Williams that describes a post apocalyptic vision of the future where civilization is destroyed by insidious decay. The salvagepunk concept provided a template for key creatives on which to base the tone and vision of the film. It is a minimalistic and idiosyncratic reinterpretation of discarded objects that makes the familiar unfamiliar. This inventiveness resonates with the ‘number eight wire’ mentality that is the uniqueness and ingenuity of New Zealand film makers. Producers Melissa Dodds and Mhairead Connor: Those that remain survive off the skeleton of what is left and refashion and repurpose found items from the wreckage and waste. AM.com: Not knowing much about your script, can you elaborate a little without revealing spoilers? JB: (our protaganist) Freya’s family are trapped inside a Boundary fence. She pursues a mysterious outsider who she believes can free her. Her desire to escape risks destroying the fragile existence of a family that is barely surviving on a dying planet. AM.com: This article (http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/4930010/Futuristic-Kiwi-dialect-on-film) has some interesting background into the linguistics that were employed for your film. Americans aren’t always eager to embrace foreign films. With the lack of subtitles, how difficult do you think it will be for American audiences to comprehend the language? JB: A majority of the characters in ‘Existence’ speak English. In addition, a unique dialect of English called ‘Rider-Speak’ has been conceived with the combined efforts of linguistic scholars Dr Peter Petrucci and Dr Martin Pavious-Smith. It is used by the Boundary Riders that patrol the fence line that separates them. It is recognisably of English origin but is a prediction of its possible evolution (MD/MC: over 300 odd years). We have since filming decided – When it is used, subtitles are provided. AM.com: I was really struck by the beautiful photography on your FaceBook page. The scenery is uniquely New Zealand. Can you talk a bit about that, and the choice of locations? JB: ‘Existence’ is a film that grew out of the landscape around Wellington, New Zealand. The maritime weather pattern batters these big desolate landscapes offering a rich environment for the imagination.. International productions are drawn to new Zealand landscapes for its fantastical quality. With the benefit of local knowledge, ‘Existence’ takes that quality and reinterprets it as post apocalyptic. The landscape is treated as a character and reflects the identity and isolation of its people within their physical environment and from each other. AM.com: Will you have a US release date? Talk about your...
