ABC’s New Pilot ‘Last Resort’ – Update and casting details
When I first heard about this upcoming ABC show I was initially very excited and that was just after reading the premise alone, but I’m always wary of new pilots until I get to hear the casting details, which gives a good indication of just how much the studio is willing to invest in any potential new series.
And with that in mind it seems like good news for Last Resort, as judging by the all-star line-up recently attached to the pilot ABC are throwing everything they’ve got at this one and that extends to the production team which includes acclaimed producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit,) who also jointly wrote the script with Karl Gajdusek (Dead Like Me).
Here’s a quick reminder of the shows premise,
Set in the not too distant future Last Resort is about the crew of a U.S nuclear submarine (the U.S.S. Nevada) who become fugitives after refusing to fire their nuclear missiles. Settling on an island that hosts a NATO listening station, the crew declare themselves as an independent nuclear nation as the world teeters on the brink of nuclear war.
If reading that’s not got you excited then hopefully this will, here are the casting details so far, many of these have only been signed up in the last few days.
Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) will play Capt. Marcus Chaplin, the commander of the submarine and its crew.
Scott Speedman (Felicity) will play Sam Kendal, who is described as even-handed and moral and is the second-in-command on the submarine.
Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse/Being Human) will play Tani, an intelligent and naive bar owner on the island. She is the daughter of an elder tribesman.
Daisy Betts (Persons Unknown) will be playing “gutsy lieutenant” Grace Shepard, a member of the crew and family friend of Capt. Chaplin.
Camille de Pazzis (a highly regarded French actress) will play Sophie, an empathetic European scientist in charge of the NATO listening station that the U.S.S. Nevada commandeers.
Autumn Reeser (No Ordinary Family) will play Kylie, a charming lobbyist for her family’s weapons manufacturing company.
Given the premise I find it difficult to imagine the Last Resort pilot not being a huge success, I mean as openings to shows go this one could be epic. Although saying that I was expecting the same of Jericho and was a bit disappointed by the poor handling of the initial nuclear attack.
Either way I think it’s a fantastic idea for a show I just hope it lives up to all our expectations.
